Lowell Folk Festival 2005
July 30-31, 2005
WUML is proud to bring you the annual broadcast of the Lowell Folk Festival
in a whole new way this year! Traditionally, we have broadcast bands and
performers from just one stage, often broadcasting some bands more than once
while missing out on other great acts playing on the rest of the festival’s
many stages. To bring you a better variety of music, and to keep from
broadcasting the same thing you may find on other stations also broadcasting
this fantastic weekend of folk, we will be broadcasting from all of the
different stages on Saturday this year. (Sunday, many of the performers you
will hear will be playing at Boardinghouse Park.) Here’s who you can expect
to hear over the course of the weekend here on WUML:
Saturday, July 30
Bill Kirchen
Nora Jean Bruso
Joe "GRKMANIA" Grkman Band
Dale Ann Bradley
Los Carácuaros
Mamadou Diabate Ensemble
Sunday, July 31
Solas
Susan Watts & The Fabulous Spheilkehs
Tatiana Sarbinska
Sounds of Korea
Hellenic & Near Eastern Musical Society Orchestra
Enjoy your no-repeat broadcast of the Lowell Folk Festival this year! And if you happen to run into any WUML station members, ask them for sunblock – they’ll have plenty to share with anyone who needs it! If you have questions, comments, or concerns about this broadcast, email folk@wuml.org. Special thanks to Phil Lupsiewicz and the Lowell National Park Service for making this broadcast possible!
ANY STATION MEMBERS WHO WANT TO ASSIST WITH THE BROADCAST, PLEASE CONTACT KORNFLAKE BY PM or by email at coffeeandcartoons(at)yahoo.com

No Spinners on WUML!
June 22nd, 2005
After months of blood and sweat from station members and supporters, we here at WUML are happy to finally
announce that our air time is remaining completely intact. The Spinners are NOT
going to appear on WUML. Christopher Lydon's show, originally slated to run 7-8pm
weekdays, is now on 9-10am, also a huge victory for us.
A huge thank you from everyone here at WUML to those who took a moment to write a letter, attend a meeting, send an email or just listen. Rest assured, your voices were heard!

Help Save Your Station
February 22nd, 2005
WUML was informed on Friday, February 18th that the University
plans on actively pursuing a partnership with the Lowell Spinners,
a sports team that is unrelated to UMass Lowell and its sports teams.
This decision was made without any input from the students who run
WUML, and have done so for the past 52 years. Our radio station
is funded through the student activities department, whose funds
come from student fees.
Starting in the summer, the administration of this college plans to rob the students of 21 hours of airtime during prime time hours. If this goes into effect such classic shows as The Stress Factor, Soul Power, and Live From The Fallout Shelter, which is now in its 19th year on the air, will be need to be cut from the schedule. These 21 hours will be filled with broadcasts of non-student sports that are unrelated to this school. These games that will be broadcast are already currently being broadcast on WCAP, whose business will suffer from the competition the move will provide. As a public University, is this the best use of our resources? This decision will also affect our weekend community programming, which has already been through many program shifts due to the Lowell Sun’s program, which was introduced in the fall of 2003 and still takes up 5AM-10AM every morning, even though the Sun exited the partnership quietly on January 3rd. They have been able to develop new audiences on the weekend, but it is unfair to ask them to move again.
WUML is not against promoting the University, and actively works towards furthering their stated goals. We signed an agreement this year to broadcast all UML hockey games and up to 20 playoff games of any other sport. We are developing a service-learning plan to integrate the radio station into practicum studies involving local non-profit organizations. We’ve recently begun visiting local high schools to expose students to college. All without having anything forced upon us.
We have shown that we are willing to work with this University, and believed that we were working towards the same goals. There are now serious questions as to the true intentions of the administration, and our trust has been betrayed. All we ask is that we are shown the same respect we have been showing this University for over 50 years.

WUML Call Letter Change
October 20, 2003
We will soon be moving our website to wuml.org (currently under construction). Rest assured, this does NOT indicate (nor do we stand for) a change in format, programming, or station philosophy. We are working our hardest to make sure this rebranding does not result in any sort of "image makeover". The change of call letters is simply an updating of our station name to reflect the school we are a part of, as is customary in college radio (for example, WUMB Boston).
We began as a carrier-current station, WLTI, when we were part of Lowell Technical Institute, and became WJUL when North and South Campuses merged to become the University of Lowell.
We have been UMass Lowell for quite awhile, so it's even a little surprising that it's taken this long for the change to be suggested.
If you would like to learn more about the call letter change or put in your two cents about it, feel free to check out the " WLTI --> WJUL --> WUML" thread in the " Static and Dead Air" section of our messageboard.
Unfortunately and ironically, the opinions expressed by WUML
do not necessarily reflect the opinions held by UMass Lowell.
